another abbey … also about 900 years old

There’s a long & winding road – at least for the last part of the route – from coast level to L’Abbaye Saint Félix de Montceau resp. the ruins … The abbey was founded in the 11th century and abandoned end of the 18th century when it became state-owned. Only parts have survived until nowadays.

The main entrance to the church is in the shade – and well locked. Inside there are some events every now and then, concerts, choir performances … However it seems to be quite constricted.

We visited the site during a weekday end of September … and we were almost the only visitors. (There isn’t any café/bistro … or whatever!)

So we went around the next corner and approached the abbey from the back.

There is a nice garden, obviously on the grounds where the former gardens of the abbey were. There is a great view of the coastline – unfortunately it was quite hazy at the coast: no photos possible.

You may walk along the garden as well as – carefully – through the inner parts of the abbey. It’s an impressive ruin with many details hidden among the stones and mostly dilapidated walls.

Once around the abbey you get an impression of the location on top of a mountain. Just imagine that everything had to be transported up the mountain … centuries ago!

Coming back to the front view … It was a nice trip to a picturesque site!
